Cantata Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein Ascension. The first line is taken from James , the crown mentioned is in Greek "stephanos". Bach first performed the cantata on 26 December The setting for the cantata in seven movements is intimate: soprano and bass soloists, two oboes , oboe da caccia , two violins , viola , and continuo.
The Anima is sung by the soprano, the bass is the vox Christi , the voice of Jesus. A four-part choir is only needed for the closing chorale, if at all. The oboes play only in the first and last movement, doubling the strings. The music for the dialogue of Jesus and the Soul is more dramatic than in other church cantatas by Bach.
Scholars have narrowed it down to four likely occasions, probably between and , but the text by an unknown poet tells us that it was certainly for the wedding of an influential supporter of music and the arts. Written out in elaborate calligraphy, the parts were likely presented as a gift to the couple, the words speaking of marital love, and the role music plays within it.
The recitatives which precede each aria are lengthy, almost like mini sermons, and describe in detail the esteem to which the patron holds music and its effect upon us all. Both flute and oboe have solo movements, and only in the final recitative and aria does the ensemble play all together. This bright finale features trills which suggest banners snapping in the breeze and vocal coloratura sparkling like celebratory fireworks!
I am grateful to Armonico Consort for sharing their excitement and belief in this venture with me. Our 21st century approach to production through an online crowdfunding campaign has brought us into contact with so many supporters and friends we might not otherwise have reached.

Great item, excellent price, fast delivery. Like Johannes Climacus on amazon. However, I can comment on its aesthetic value. Here, I confess, I am totally biased; I learned to love the cantatas via Werner and his recordings, first released in Australia by the World Record Club - I have a whole stack of vinyl.
Werner was recording as the whole idea of Bach performance was changing. There was already a move away from "operatic" voices of a type that Bach would not have known, and towards smaller ensembles. It wasn't HIP Werner uses modern instruments , but it was on the way. And, to my ears, the Werner recordings, while occasionally lacking the virtuosity of later recordings, have a charm all of their own.Soprano Gillian Keith joins the acclaimed Armonico Consort for the first in a three-part series featuring the solo cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. Reviews 'Profoundly incisive and intelligent singing the jewel in the crown here is the late and woefully under-appreciated wedding cantata, O holder Tag ' .
