It has been a long time in coming out on CD, as with Sweet Oasis, released in May, there were complicated contract issues that took a lot of sorting out. But, for those who remember her early work on RSO Records, this has been well worth the wait. Six Barbara Dickson songs and six cover versions. In fairness to the cover versions we are talking about an artist who has always written better songs than the ones she has covered, and this is without any doubt her best work.
Great to hear this without the clicks and scratches - and the CD reveals detail that my vinyl never did. Excellent reproduction. Replacing the LP. Barbara can do no wrong. It's been a long time coming on CD and sadly this has been release has been let down by the poor mastering. The six songs that were previously issued on the CD 'The World of Barbara Dickson' sounded much more natural on that release - and far closer to the LP. The vocals on this album always seemed a bit recessed but for some reason the high frequencies on this CD have been heavily boosted making the vocals sound thin and harsh with no real body.
If anything the EQ applied here just highlights deficiencies on the master tape. The song 'Goodbye Dreamer' sounds like it was taken from a very low bit rate MP3 and just sounds awful while 'Answer Me' has the beginning chopped off! The bonus tracks are a bit hit and miss - 'Fine Feathers' seems to have been taken from vinyl played on an indifferent turntable. As previously mentioned - the Amazon track listing is incorrect and the last two tracks are missing.
I was looking forward to this release having heard the recent 'Sweet Oasis' CD but this is a bit of a let down. This was one of the first albums I ever bought, and it remains one of my favourites. There are seven cover versions and five originals here. For this record, Barbara wrote some of the most beautiful ballads ever recorded, like 'Goodbye to the Cries', and the haunting 'Goodbye Dreamer'. There are also a couple that demonstrate her folk credentials, 'From the Heart' and the apocalyptic 'Judgement Day'.
That's all very well, but due to managerial errors and the usual corporate moronism, you cannot buy this wonderful album on CD. All I have is a scratched record and a cassette that sounds like it spent a good deal of its life in a bucket of salt water.
Put your foot down Babs, this was your finest hour. Predictably had some crackles on it but that's the magic of vinyl. Couldn't be happier as I couldn't find it on cd. One person found this helpful. See all reviews.
