SD is another classic of the prime 70s-era Linda. It was hugely popular but for me ranks lower on my list of favorites, even though it's got a lot of great songs.
I tired a bit of Blue Bayou for some reason, even though she sings it so beautifully. I love the way she performed it live over the years, always singing the last verse in Spanish - that was cool. Before it became well-known that she did this, the crowd would really react cheering when she started the Spanish part. It was a cool way to really make the song her own. I love the sexy little growls in It's So Easy - the second time she says " Souther's modestly self-pitying "Simple Man, Simple Dream" with a thorough sympathy for and understanding of Souther's message- that the lover of simple truths is easily ridiculed.
She gets Eric Kaz' complex "Sorrow Lives Here" Kaz, it seems, is getting ready to challenge Leonard Cohen as the world's most morose songwriter just right.
Simple Dreams' second side is better paced and begins with the song, "Blue Bayou," that caused me to compare Ronstadt to Billie Holiday.
The transition she makes from the introduction to the chorus "I'm going back someday, come what may to Blue Bayou" is simply electrifying. It also knocked Elvis Presley out of 1 on Billboard' s Country Albums chart after 'The King' held the gridlock for fifteen consecutive weeks following his death in August. Originally, the cover photograph had Ronstadt dressed in a mini-slip seated in front of multiple mirrors. Uncomfortable with the physical exposure, Linda changed into a robe, and the picture was made artificially grainy.
A re-touched outtake photo from the original photo sessions was later included on the inner sleeve for her Platinum-plus Greatest Hits, Volume 2 album in A triple platinum album spawning 4 hit singles. Though sadly not by her. It was the first LP I bought by her. On a whim to be honest. Nearly 40 years later I think it's the best of her 70's albums. It flows very well and there isn't an ounce of waste throughout. Really beautiful moment. So, are you a fan of Simple Dreams?
