It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco , but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time. Due to demands by the band's label, Warner Brothers, four of the tracks were edited for length.
None of us had any experience with performing for recording We were still learning how to be a band. Though the album was considered "a big deal in San Francisco", it did not see much airplay on AM radio stations outside of the Bay Area. The freeform FM radio format that favored bands like the Dead was still developing. The band used the collective pseudonym "McGannahan Skjellyfetti" for their group-written originals and arrangements.
The name was a misrendering of "Skujellifeddy", a character in Kenneth Patchen's comic novel The Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer , plus the name of then-frontman Pigpen's cat. Thank you very much. This song helped me get through rehab and helps me with recovery Flag ralphdec on April 04, This makes me appreciate the lyrics so much more. To pay homage to another band while providing fabulous background music is very much appreciated.
Kudos to the Dead. Flag celino on July 10, General Comment My personal opinion about this song is as a kind of protest about the Vietnam war which was, unless I am very much mistaken, well underway at the time of this song's writing.
The giveaway verse is the one that begins, "Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like? Their walls are built of cannonballs, their motto is don't tread on me. The Dead are playing by the riverside, preaching peace "got some things to talk about" as the tides of war threaten to envelop them. They talk of the transience of life, and how trivial and pointless hate is given a man's short time on this earth As for the rest of the lyrics, they're completely beyond me.

While the single was the group's first chart hit peaking at No. At a time when the Grateful Dead were already an underground legend, "Uncle John's Band" and to some degree its albummate " Casey Jones " was the first time many in the general rock audience actually heard the band's music. Moreover, the song affected the mainstream because of first using the word "goddamn" in the unedited single, which many radio stations played instead of the edited version; together with the reference to cocaine in "Casey Jones," the two songs made the band a "thorn in the side of Nixon that became a badge of honor to the masses.Mar 06, · 50+ videos Play all Mix - The Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band (Studio Version) YouTube Grateful Dead - The Wheel / I Need A Miracle / Uncle John's Band - 07/04/86 (OFFICIAL) - Duration:
